The new street will be called Sahamyllynrinne. Sahamyllynrinne as well as Hernepellontie, which is being renovated at the same time, are located in Viikinranta. The street construction is linked to the construction of the Energy Quarter at Viikinranta, which will be receiving its own transport connection.
After the completion of the works, the vehicle traffic to the Energy Quarter will be directed to Sahamyllynrinne, which will reduce the vehicle traffic passing through the adjacent residential area. Currently, vehicle traffic passes through Pornaistenkuja and Sahamyllyntie.
Work started with rock excavation at the beginning of 2025
The new street will be built in a rocky area, which will require significant excavation work. The excavation works started in January and were completed at the end of 2025.
Cabling work in autumn 2025
The work continued in the autumn of 2025 with the construction of Fingrid's 400 kilovolt cable network link. When completed, the cable link will pass from the Viikinranta Energy Block to Länsisalmi substation in Vantaa. The entire cable link is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
The new cable link is a response to the growing electricity consumption in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. It is a joint project of the City of Helsinki, Helen Electricity Network and Fingrid that promotes the green transition.
Streets will be built in 2026
The construction of Sahamyllynrinne will start in May 2026.
The project involves the construction of Sahamyllynrinne and the related street, pedestrian and municipal engineering structures. A footpath will be built in the northern part of the street and new pillar lamps will be installed.
At the intersection of Sahamyllyntie and Sahamyllynrinne, a turning area will be built next to the energy block.
In addition to this, landscaping and finishing work will be carried out.
The work phases will include drilling, which may cause noise nuisance. The work will be carried out on weekdays between 7.00 and 18.00. Any work to be carried out at night and at weekends will be announced separately.
Temporary disruptions to moving in the area may be caused by traffic arrangements during the work period.
The work is expected to be completed in November 2026. The contractor is GRK Suomi Oy.
