Missing section of Pasila Baana planned for Länsi-Pasila

Planning has started for the penultimate section of the Pasilanbaana route. Comments on the traffic plan draft for the section travelling through Länsi-Pasila can be submitted online and at a public event to be held on 1 October. The construction is planned to start in 2027.

The aim of the planning is to raise the quality of the cycling route to the high standards of a main cycling route and to improve walking conditions and safety in the area. The existing east-west cycling route in Länsi-Pasila does not meet the quality standards of the Baana pathways in terms of fluidity of travel, separation of the different modes of transport and the number of users.

The route connects the area between Central Park and Esterinportti

The Pasilanbaana route runs from east to west from Pikku-Huopalahti to Arabia. A large part of the route has already been built. The traffic plan currently being drafted covers one of the last missing sections. The section of the Baana route in question, extending just under half a kilometre, is located in the area between Central Park and Esterinportti in Länsi-Pasila. The Central Park’s plan is excluded from the planning area. The planning of the Arabianranta section of the Pasilanbaana will start in 2025.

In the traffic plan draft being presented, the Baana route runs along Palkkatilankatu, Pasilan Puistotie and Esterinpolku, ending at Esterinportti. The Baana route will cause some changes to service traffic routes and to the location and number of parking spaces available. The planned route will require the removal of some trees along the route. The removed trees will be replaced by new trees planted at another point along the route.

Take part in the public meeting and leave your feedback on the plan’s draft with a survey

City residents and other local operators can give feedback on the preliminary traffic plan by filling in a survey between 1 October and 5 October. The plans will be presented at a public online event on Wednesday 1 October from 6 pm to 7 pm. The event is a platform for the audience to comment on and ask questions about the plans.

The comments received will be used to finalise the traffic plan in late 2025. After this, the draft will then move on to further planning in early 2026, during which the construction details and technical solutions will be refined. The construction is planned to start in 2027.

Helsinki’s Baanas are cycling routes of the highest quality. They allow for smooth and steady cycling between the city centre, residential areas and key workplace areas. In the future, the Baanas will form a coherent regional network of cycle paths in Helsinki that will extend roughly 140 kilometres.
