‘Roadwork Site of the Year’ competition won by the Jätkäsaari isthmus bridge and Jätkäsaarenlaituri worksite

The Jätkäsaari isthmus bridge and Jätkäsaarenlaituri were named Helsinki’s Roadwork Site of the Year 2025. The competition, organised by the City of Helsinki, seeks a worksite where temporary access routes, accessibility and communication are handled in an exemplary manner from the point of view of different street users.

The panel of judges stated that the worksite, which has a challenging location, has implemented a number of high-quality solutions to promote smooth traffic and ensure safety for Helsinki residents. The contractor is GRK Suomi Oy and the client is the City of Helsinki.

Honourable mention for good attitude

This year, the honourable mention awarded in the competition was intended to reward a project team that showed an exemplary attitude. The ‘Attitude of the Year’ honourable mention was awarded to the Tieluiska Oy project team, whose positive and encouraging attitude towards reducing negative impacts was conveyed throughout the entire Tattariharjuntie worksite.

The ‘Roadwork Site of the Year’ competition was held for the fifth time

The aim of the competition is to promote good worksite practices and share them among operators in the sector. During its visits, the multi-professional panel of judges assesses how well the worksite has managed to ensure that the worksite arrangements, signage and temporary access routes serve street users. The worksite’s attitude towards minimising negative impacts was a key factor in the search for a winner.

“The prerequisite for winning is for the worksite to have a genuine desire to influence matters and the ability to come up with solutions that are well thought out and carefully implemented. Over the course of the competition years, we have seen how good practices have started to spread, and worksites have also learned from each other,” summarises Project Director Mikko Suikki from the City of Helsinki.

The panel for the Roadwork Site of the Year competition consists of construction industry professionals (Infra ry) and clients (Kiinteistönomistajat ja rakennuttajat Rakli ry, City of Helsinki, HSY), City actors (HSL and the Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce) and accessibility experts (the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired and the Finnish Association of People with Physical Disabilities). The panel is coordinated by Ramboll.

The winner of the competition was announced at an award ceremony at the Maarakennuspäivät civil engineering fair at Finlandia Hall on 2 October.
