Sustainable daily life is important for everyone — new website provides advice in many languages

The new Sustainable daily choices page has been published on the hel.fi website. The page tells in easily understandable terms how everyone can protect the environment while also saving money through their daily choices.

The page is available in Finnish, Swedish, English, Arabic, Somali, Ukrainian, Russian and Estonian. The aim of providing the page in multiple languages is to reach a larger proportion of city residents who are migrants. At the same time, the aim is to strengthen the opportunities of all Helsinki residents to participate in and contribute to the promotion of climate and sustainability objectives.

The web page provides concrete tips on recycling, reducing consumption and utilising shared-use services, with the help of which anyone can lead a sustainable daily life in Helsinki.

The page lists circular economy services offered by the City of Helsinki as well as private and non-profit services and service providers. There is information available on opportunities to borrow, rent, recycle, repair and maintain goods, for example. The page also provides information on waste sorting.

The web page also features downloadable information material, such as the brochure “How to save money and the environment – Getting to know circular economy” and a small guide on sustainable water use.

The content of the website has been developed as part of the city's Sustainable Daily Choices project and the pilot of the EU-funded CommuniCity project supporting the inclusion of city residents. The CommuniCity project is coordinated in Finland by the City of Helsinki's innovation company Forum Virium Helsinki. The pilot solution was created by Stereoscape, a company specialised in digital solutions.

The circular economy is one of the key means of tackling the sustainability crisis. It can help mitigate climate change, slow the depletion of natural resources and combat biodiversity loss. Helsinki has ambitious environmental protection objectives and a comprehensive action plan for the circular and sharing economy. In addition to its own measures, the City wants to strengthen the opportunities of Helsinki residents to make daily choices that reduce emissions and support the circular economy.
