Home to over 38,000 residents, the district comprises the residential areas of Mellunmäki, Kontula, Kivikko, Kurkimäki and Vesala. Shops and services are concentrated in the centre of Kontula, which is also the heart of the area's diverse cultural events.

How Mellunkylä is evolving

The transformation of Mellunkylä is mainly concentrated in Kontula and Mellunmäki. In Kontula, Kontula Shopping Centre will be at the centre of this transformation. In Mellunmäki, the transformation is concentrated around the metro station and the junction of Länsimäentie and Itäväylä.

Mellunkylä is one of the four suburban regeneration areas in Helsinki that the City will focus on developing in the coming years. In Mellunkylä, suburban regeneration means long-term development through urban infill and service development, but also shorter-term measures to improve the urban environment, e.g. around the station and other public spaces.

Kontula Shopping Centre will see much development over the next few years. Negotiations are underway between the City of Helsinki and the real estate companies that own the shopping centre buildings.

The buildings and commercial premises of the shopping centre are owned by four real estate companies, two of which are commercial companies and two subsidiaries of the City of Helsinki.

Helsinki owns the land in the area and leases it to companies. The City of Helsinki is negotiating with the real estate companies on the future development of the shopping centre.

In the city plan, the centre of Kontula is designated as an area of central functions, referring to commercial and public services, business and office premises, housing construction and parks. Regarding the available public services, at least the library, youth services with their supplementary activities and the swimming pool will remain in the Kontula Shopping Centre area.  Helsinki plans to centralise its own services in the shopping centre area under one roof in Kontula-talo, which will serve as a multipurpose platform for arts and culture activities in Kontula. The design of Kontula-talo is about to start and the local residents will be invited to participate in the process at an early stage.

The City will provide information on the development of the shopping centre area on this page and in every other issue of the local newspaper. Businesses operating in the shopping centre area can obtain information from their company boards or from the owners of leased premises.

Laakavuori Community Centre will become the new heart of Mellunmäki. The community centre will be built on the site of the current Laakavuori School and daycare centre. The existing buildings will be demolished.

Laakavuori Community Centre will house a daycare centre, a school, youth facilities and adult education centre activities. The school will have a large gym hall suitable for a variety of ball games.

The aim is that Laakavuori Community Centre will become a multipurpose building that offers diverse services to local residents and adapts to their needs. Demolition of the existing buildings in Laakavuori is currently expected to start in 2027, with construction of the new buildings to begin in the same year. The goal is to complete the project in 2030.

In addition to Kontula Shopping Centre and Laakavuori Community Centre, Mellunkylä will see renovation and extension projects for schools and daycare centres. Currently, the renovation of Kontula Daycare Centre and the renovation and extension of Kontula Primary School are under planning.

In Mellunmäki, the new Mellunpuisto residential districts will be built at the junction of Ounasvaarantie and Pallaksentie. The area will comprise four districts, with a total of 17 apartment buildings and homes for around 2,000 residents. The first buildings will be completed in 2025.

New residential blocks for around 800 residents are planned in the centre of Mellunmäki. Premises for street-level shops are planned for the buildings. These new centre blocks will make Mellunmäki into a new, urban centre. Construction of the central city blocks is expected to start in 2027.

The new Bredbacka residential area is planned for Mellunmäki, bordering Länsimäentie and Itäväylä. Construction of Bredbacka is expected to start towards the end of this decade.

Plots for detached houses are available to be applied for around Mellunkylä.

Naulakallionpuisto Park next to Mellunmäki playground will be completely renovated and transformed into a lush and inviting green space. The park’s construction could start in 2028, according to current estimates.

Kontulan kelkkapuisto park will become a more diverse space with the construction of features such as a new fitness area and a flower meadow-themed playground. The construction is planned to start in 2026.

Mellunkylä will also see extensive renovation of existing parks and squares.

A new Ojapuisto Sports Park will be built in Mellunmäki. The sports park will be built on the south side of Naulakallio Park, near Mellunmäki Primary School.

The new sports park will include a multi-purpose field and a large artificial turf field that can be turned into an ice rink in the winter. The park will also feature a running track, athletics training facilities and an outdoor fitness area. The fields in the new sports park will be used by schools in the area on weekdays, and at other times they will be used as a public sports facility. Construction of the sports park started in 2024 and is due to be completed in 2026.

Kivikko Sports Park is expanding every year. In recent years, the park has been given a new ice rink, as well as new facilities for parkour, climbing and roller-skating, and a combined skateboard and scooter track. Planning for the next activities to come is underway.

Services

Diverse services are Mellunkylä's strength. The recreational facilities are excellent – including a swimming pool with fitness facilities, a BMX track and a disc golf course suitable for competitive use. The skateboarding facilities are top-notch, with indoor and outdoor skating areas.
A wide range of shops and services can be found at Kontula shopping centre.
